Is the ASUS VivoBook 14 Upgradeable?

Yes, many ASUS VivoBook 14 laptops are upgradeable — especially models from the X412, F412, X415 and M413 families. The exact upgrade route depends on the version you own because ASUS used different storage layouts across the VivoBook 14 range.

You do not need to know which storage type your laptop has before booking. Our compatibility check confirms the correct upgrade path before any work goes ahead.

Which ASUS VivoBook 14 Models Are Covered?

This page covers the main ASUS VivoBook 14 families from roughly 2019 to 2022. If you are not sure which version you have, send us the model number on WhatsApp and we’ll confirm before you reserve.

Best upgrade candidates — dual storage possible

VivoBook 14 X412 & F412

X412 (2019–2020) F412 (2019–2020) M.2 SSD + 2.5″ bay

Strong upgrade candidates. Many configurations support both an M.2 NVMe SSD and a 2.5-inch drive bay. This means the laptop can use a fast SSD for Windows while keeping the existing hard drive for file storage — best of both worlds.

Good candidates — M.2 upgrade

VivoBook 14 X415 & M413

X415 (2020–2021) M413 AMD Ryzen (2020–2021)

X415 models moved further toward M.2-only storage. Some shipped with hard drives or small SSDs. M413 is the AMD Ryzen version — processor is usually still capable, storage is often the bottleneck. Both are good upgrade candidates.

Newer model — SSD replacement

VivoBook 14 X421

X421 (2021–2022)

More likely to already have an SSD. Can still be upgraded if the current SSD is too small, failing or not performing well, but it is not usually the hard-drive-to-SSD transformation case.

X4152020–2021M.2 NVMe; some HDD configsReplace HDD or upgrade small SSD

Why Is My ASUS VivoBook 14 So Slow?

The most common reason an older ASUS VivoBook 14 feels slow is storage speed. If the laptop came with a mechanical hard drive, Windows has to wait for a physical spinning disk every time it starts up, opens an app, loads files, installs updates or switches between tasks.

This is why a laptop can feel slow even when the processor is still good enough for everyday use. In Task Manager, this often appears as 100% disk usage — the CPU is fine but the storage is the bottleneck.

Replacing the hard drive with an SSD removes that bottleneck. The practical difference is simple: faster startup, quicker app loading, fewer freezes and a more responsive laptop. This matters especially on the VivoBook 14 because it was designed to be portable — a laptop that takes several minutes to boot is frustrating at university, in a coffee shop, or before a video call.

ASUS VivoBook 14 Storage Options Explained

VivoBook 14 storage can vary by model. You do not need to know which type your laptop has before booking — we confirm the correct upgrade path. But here is a plain-English explanation of the three types you may encounter:

Slowest — upgrade priority

HDD (Hard Drive)

The older spinning disk type. Gives plenty of space but is much slower because it relies on moving parts. A 1TB HDD can feel painfully slow running Windows — this is the biggest upgrade case.

Faster — 2.5″ slot

SATA SSD

A faster replacement for an older 2.5-inch hard drive. Fits the same bay but with no moving parts — much faster and more reliable. Good upgrade option on X412 and F412 models with a 2.5″ bay.

Fastest — recommended

M.2 NVMe SSD

A small, slim SSD connecting directly to the motherboard. This is the fastest upgrade route on supported VivoBook 14 models — the modern storage standard used in most new laptops.

Need More Storage Space on Your ASUS VivoBook 14?

Many VivoBook 14 laptops are bought as lightweight everyday machines, but the original storage can become frustrating over time. Models sold with 128GB, 256GB or 512GB storage start to feel cramped once Windows updates, downloads, photos, cloud folders, apps and school or work files build up.

If your VivoBook 14 keeps showing low storage warnings, or you are constantly deleting files just to make room, a larger internal SSD is a cleaner long-term solution than relying on USB drives or external storage.

Light use

500GB SSD

Suitable for everyday browsing, documents and a modest file library.

Best for most

1TB SSD

Best balance for most VivoBook 14 users — room for Windows, apps, photos, downloads and future updates.

Heavy use

2TB SSD

Large videos, games, design files, photos or heavy project folders all on the laptop at once.

Technical Details & Special Cases

Expand any section for model-specific or technical detail.

Yes, on many ASUS VivoBook 14 models the SSD can be upgraded or replaced. If your laptop already has a small SSD such as 128GB or 256GB, upgrading to a larger SSD gives you more space while keeping the laptop fast.

If your VivoBook 14 has a hard drive, replacing it with an SSD makes a much bigger difference — the laptop is not necessarily worn out, but the hard drive is making everything feel slow.

If the laptop has only one M.2 slot, the upgrade is usually a replacement rather than an addition. If the laptop has both an M.2 slot and a 2.5-inch bay, we may be able to install a fast SSD for Windows while keeping the existing hard drive for file storage.

Some ASUS VivoBook 14 X412 models support dual storage — meaning the laptop can use a fast M.2 SSD and a separate 2.5-inch drive at the same time. Windows and applications run from the SSD, while older files, photos and documents remain accessible on the hard drive.

This is particularly valuable for VivoBook 14 owners who have used the laptop for university, work, photos or creative files and do not want to delete years of files just to make the laptop faster.

Not every VivoBook 14 has this layout. Newer models often use M.2 only. We confirm the storage layout before completing the upgrade so the correct route is always used.

Low to moderate difficulty for an experienced technician, but not always ideal as a first DIY job. The bottom cover needs to be removed carefully, and the internal battery should be disconnected before working around the storage area.

The VivoBook 14 also uses ASUS’s ErgoLift hinge design on many versions — this slightly raises the chassis when the lid is opened. It does not stop the SSD upgrade, but the laptop can sit at a slight angle during disassembly. On models with a 2.5-inch drive bay, there may be a caddy, connector, ribbon cable or bracket that needs careful handling.

The harder part is not the physical work — it is knowing which SSD type is compatible, whether data can be cloned, and how to avoid damaging clips, cables or the battery connection.

An SSD can help battery life indirectly. A hard drive has moving parts and can stay active for long periods when Windows is loading, indexing files or dealing with background tasks. An SSD completes storage tasks much faster and uses no spinning disk.

The main benefit is still speed, but many users notice the laptop feels calmer, quieter and more efficient after the upgrade. This matters more on the VivoBook 14 than on larger laptops because the whole point of the 14-inch model is portability.

The ASUS VivoBook 14 and VivoBook 15 are closely related. Both can suffer from the same storage problem when fitted with a hard drive or small SSD. The upgrade is still worth considering on the VivoBook 14 — if you bought it because it was easy to carry, improving its speed can make it useful again as a portable everyday laptop.

The key difference is storage layout. VivoBook 15 models such as the X512 often have strong dual-storage options. VivoBook 14 X412 models can also support dual storage, but later 14-inch models are more likely to be M.2-only.

If you have the larger model, visit our ASUS VivoBook 15 SSD upgrade page.

How Much Faster Will It Be?

The biggest improvement is felt during startup and everyday use. A VivoBook 14 running from a hard drive may take several minutes to fully boot into Windows — especially after updates or when multiple startup apps are loading. After an SSD upgrade, startup is usually dramatically quicker.

If your VivoBook 14 already has an SSD, upgrading to a larger one may not create the same dramatic speed jump — but a nearly full 128GB or 256GB SSD can slow down because Windows has very little room to work. Moving to 500GB, 1TB or 2TB makes the laptop easier to use and maintain.

Is It Worth Upgrading an ASUS VivoBook 14?

For many VivoBook 14 owners, an SSD upgrade is worth it — especially if the laptop is physically in good condition and the main complaint is speed. The VivoBook 14 is a good everyday machine when the storage is not holding it back. For web browsing, emails, documents, online meetings, streaming, studying and general home use, many models still have enough life left after a storage upgrade.

The upgrade makes the most sense if your VivoBook 14 has an Intel Core i3, Core i5, Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5 processor and is currently running from a hard drive or small SSD. Compared with replacing the laptop, an upgrade can extend the life of the one you already know and use — instead of spending £400–£600 on another portable laptop.

If the laptop has a very low-end processor or other faults, an SSD still helps with storage speed but will not turn a basic processor into a high-performance one. We would always give an honest assessment before proceeding.
