HP Laptop 14 Running Slow? Here’s Why
If your HP Laptop 14 is taking several minutes to start, freezing when you open Chrome, showing low storage warnings, or sitting at 100% disk usage in Task Manager, you are not alone. The HP Laptop 14 — also referred to as the HP Notebook 14 in older documentation and service manuals — is one of the most common budget Windows laptops sold in the UK, especially through Argos, Currys, Amazon and similar retailers.
This family includes many different versions, including 14-bs, 14-cf, 14-da, 14-dq, 14-dv, 14-dy, 14-fq, 14-em and 14-ep models. Some are excellent SSD upgrade candidates. Some already have a small SSD and simply need more space. Others, especially cheaper Intel Celeron models with 32GB or 64GB storage, may use eMMC storage that cannot be upgraded in the same way.
That is why this page is slightly different from a normal SSD upgrade page. Many HP Laptop 14 models can be transformed with an SSD, but some need checking first. ALVA PC offers a UK-wide Windows laptop SSD upgrade service where we confirm the correct upgrade path before fitting parts.
You can reserve your HP Laptop 14 SSD upgrade for £10. The £10 reservation is deducted from your final price if the upgrade goes ahead. Our full SSD upgrade prices are 500GB for £150 total, 1TB for £190 total, and 2TB for £240 total.

Before And After Performance — HDD vs SSD
The biggest improvement on a compatible HP Laptop 14 usually comes from replacing the slow hard drive with an SSD. A hard drive has moving parts. An SSD has no moving parts and can access data almost instantly. That difference is why a laptop that feels unusable can suddenly become responsive again.
On many older HP Laptop 14 models, the processor is not the main problem. The laptop is waiting for the hard drive. Windows updates, antivirus scans, browser cache, startup apps and background services all ask the drive for information at the same time. A 5400rpm hard drive cannot keep up, so the laptop feels frozen even when the CPU is not being heavily used.
| Metric | Before — HDD 5400rpm | After — SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Boot time — typical | 3–7 minutes | 10–20 seconds |
| Boot time — severe cases | 5–8+ minutes to usable desktop | Under 20 seconds |
| Disk usage at idle | 95–100% | Usually under 10% |
| Time to open Chrome | 20–40 seconds | 2–3 seconds |
| Windows updates | Can take hours | Usually much quicker |
| General responsiveness | Delays, freezing, “not responding” messages | Near-instant response for everyday tasks |
For everyday use such as browsing, emails, documents, YouTube, school work and video calls, this is often the difference between a laptop that feels finished and a laptop that is worth keeping.
Why Your HP Laptop 14 Hits 100% Disk Usage
Think of a hard drive like an old filing cabinet. Every time Windows needs a file, the drive has to physically move to find it. That was acceptable years ago when computers did less in the background. Modern Windows asks for dozens of files at the same time, especially during startup, updates, antivirus checks and browser activity.
An SSD is different. It has no spinning disk and no moving arm. It can find information almost instantly. That is why replacing the drive can fix the 100% disk usage problem on compatible HP Laptop 14 models.
The symptoms are usually familiar:
- The laptop takes several minutes to start.
- Chrome or Edge freezes when opened.
- Windows updates take hours.
- Task Manager shows disk usage stuck at 100%.
- The laptop becomes unusable even with only one or two programs open.
- Startup apps, antivirus scans and background services make everything worse.
Cleaning temporary files or disabling startup apps may help slightly, but it does not remove the main bottleneck. If the laptop is running Windows from a slow mechanical hard drive, the permanent fix is usually an SSD upgrade.
Which HP Laptop 14 Do You Have?
“HP Laptop 14” is not one laptop. It is a family name used across many different versions. The exact model matters because the upgrade path can be completely different.
You can usually find the model number on the bottom cover. Look for a code such as 14-bs, 14-cf, 14-da, 14-dq, 14-dv, 14-dy, 14-fq, 14-em or 14-ep. You may also find it in Windows by going to Settings → System → About.
| HP Laptop 14 family | Typical storage | Upgrade note |
|---|---|---|
| 14-bs | 500GB / 1TB HDD on many Core models | Often upgradeable, but some M.2 options are SATA-only. |
| 14-cf / 14-da | HDD on Core models, eMMC on some Celeron models | Good upgrade candidates if HDD-based; eMMC versions need checking. |
| 14-dq | 64GB eMMC or small SSD | Highest caution. Some eMMC versions have no usable internal SSD upgrade path. |
| 14-dv / 14-dy / 14-fq | 128GB / 256GB SSD common | Usually more about storage expansion than HDD replacement. |
| 14-em / 14-ep | NVMe SSD | Modern storage expansion candidate if the original SSD is too small. |
This is why we do not assume every HP Laptop 14 is the same. Before fitting parts, we confirm whether your model uses a hard drive, a standard SSD, or eMMC storage.
If Your HP Laptop 14 Has eMMC Storage — What This Means
Some cheaper HP Laptop 14 models, especially those with Intel Celeron processors and 32GB or 64GB storage, use eMMC storage. This is not the same as a normal hard drive or standard SSD.
eMMC is a small flash storage chip soldered directly to the motherboard. It is similar to the storage used in budget tablets and low-cost Chromebooks. Because it is soldered, it cannot be removed and replaced like a normal drive.
This does not mean your laptop is broken. It means the upgrade path is different. On some eMMC HP Laptop 14 models, there is no standard internal SSD upgrade available. On a small number of models, there may be an internal M.2 slot, but it may only support certain SSD types or may not be functional at all. This is why compatibility checking matters so much on this family.
If your HP Laptop 14 has eMMC storage, we may still be able to help in one of three ways:
- Confirm whether your exact model has a working SSD expansion slot.
- Advise whether a Windows reinstall or cleanup is the better option.
- Recommend external or cloud storage options if internal expansion is not realistic.
We would rather tell you honestly if your laptop is not a good SSD upgrade candidate than take a booking for a job that will not give you the result you expect.
The Dual Storage Option on Certain HP Laptop 14 Models
Some HP Laptop 14 models can support a very useful dual storage setup. This usually applies to certain HDD-based Intel Core versions where an SSD can be added while the existing hard drive remains inside the laptop.
In plain English, this means your laptop can get a fast SSD for Windows and applications, while your old hard drive remains available for files, photos, videos and documents. The laptop becomes much faster, but you do not lose the storage space you already had.
This is especially useful for customers who are worried about losing files. In many cases, your documents, photos and existing data can remain on the original drive while the new SSD handles Windows. Where a full data migration is needed, we include that as part of the service wherever the original drive is healthy enough to copy.
Not every HP Laptop 14 supports dual storage. Some later models use one M.2 SSD only. Some eMMC models cannot use a normal internal upgrade at all. We confirm this before proceeding.
Need More Storage Space on Your HP Laptop 14?
Many HP Laptop 14 owners are not trying to replace the laptop. They may only use it for school, work, browsing, Word, email or YouTube — but the storage can become frustrating surprisingly quickly.
This is especially common on lower-cost HP 14 models sold with 64GB or 128GB eMMC storage. Windows updates, OneDrive syncing, browser cache, photos, downloads and basic apps can quickly fill the drive, leaving users wondering why a simple everyday laptop is already showing low-storage warnings.
The difficult part is that not every HP Laptop 14 has the same upgrade path. Some models can be upgraded with a proper SSD, while others use soldered or heavily limited eMMC storage. This creates confusion because many owners assume eMMC is the same as an SSD, or that every HP 14 shown in a YouTube upgrade video will match their own laptop.
There is also the practical worry of opening the laptop. HP 14 models can have hidden screws, plastic clips and lightweight casing that make DIY upgrades feel risky, especially for non-technical users.
For compatible models, a larger SSD can make a big difference: more usable space, fewer storage warnings, and a laptop that can feel far more responsive. We check the exact HP Laptop 14 variant first, confirm whether an upgrade is possible, and where supported transfer your files and Windows setup to the new SSD.
Best storage upgrade options for HP Laptop 14:
- 500GB SSD — suitable for light everyday use
- 1TB SSD — best choice for most compatible HP 14 users
- 2TB SSD — ideal for larger files, photos, videos and long-term use

Is It Worth Upgrading an HP Laptop 14?
For many HP Laptop 14 owners, yes — but the honest answer depends on the version you have.
If your HP Laptop 14 has an Intel Core i3 or Core i5 processor and a mechanical hard drive, an SSD upgrade is usually worth it. The processor is often still good enough for everyday use. The hard drive is the part making the laptop feel slow. Replacing it with an SSD can extend the laptop’s useful life and avoid the cost of buying another budget laptop.
If your HP Laptop 14 already has a small SSD, the question is usually storage space. A 128GB SSD can fill quickly with Windows updates, Office, OneDrive files, downloads and photos. In that case, moving to 500GB, 1TB or 2TB can make the laptop much easier to live with.
If your HP Laptop 14 has a Celeron processor and 32GB or 64GB eMMC storage, the upgrade case is more limited. Some of these machines cannot be upgraded internally in the usual way. If your main problem is software-related slowness, a Windows reinstall may help. If the problem is simply that the storage is too small and there is no working internal expansion slot, a replacement laptop may be the better long-term option.
That honest assessment is part of the service. We check first, then advise the best route.
How Difficult Is the HP Laptop 14 SSD Upgrade?
On compatible HP Laptop 14 models, the SSD upgrade is usually moderate rather than extremely difficult. Most versions use screws and plastic clips rather than heavy adhesive. However, it is not as simple as opening a small service door on the bottom.
Many HP Laptop 14 models hide screws under long rubber feet or small rubber bumpers. These need to be removed carefully so they can be reattached afterwards. Pulling them too aggressively can stretch or tear the rubber, leaving the bottom panel looking messy.
Once the screws are removed, the bottom cover usually has to be released with a plastic opening tool. The clips can feel tight, and forcing the panel can crack the casing. On several models, the battery should be disconnected before working near the storage slot.
The biggest difficulty is not just opening the laptop. It is choosing the correct SSD. Some HP Laptop 14 models support 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Some support M.2 SATA. Some support M.2 NVMe. Some eMMC models have no practical internal SSD upgrade route. A visually similar slot does not always mean the same SSD will work.
That is why professional checking is important on this model family. The wrong SSD can waste money and still leave the laptop unchanged.
Common HP Laptop 14 SSD Upgrade Questions
Can I upgrade my HP Laptop 14 to an SSD?
Many HP Laptop 14 models can be upgraded to an SSD, especially HDD-based versions with Intel Core processors. Some Celeron models with eMMC storage cannot be upgraded in the same way, so compatibility needs checking first.
Will I lose my files?
Data migration is included where the original drive is healthy enough to copy. If your model supports dual storage, we may be able to keep the original drive inside the laptop while adding a new SSD for Windows.
Can I replace a 512GB SSD with a 1TB SSD?
Yes, on compatible models. Many newer HP Laptop 14 versions use a standard M.2 SSD, which can often be upgraded to 1TB or 2TB.
What if my HP Laptop 14 has 64GB eMMC?
64GB eMMC is usually soldered to the motherboard and cannot be replaced like a normal SSD. We check whether your exact model has a working expansion slot before confirming any upgrade.
How long does the upgrade take?
Our normal SSD upgrade turnaround is 3–5 business days from the point you send the laptop to the point you receive the upgraded laptop back.
