Why Your HP Laptop 15 Is Running Slow
If your HP Laptop 15 is taking three or four minutes to start, freezing when you open Chrome, or showing 100% disk usage in Task Manager, you are not alone. The HP Laptop 15 family was sold in huge numbers through Argos, Currys, Amazon and other UK retailers, often as an affordable everyday laptop for home, school, university or basic work.
Many of these laptops were not slow because the whole machine was bad. They were slow because the storage inside was holding everything back. A traditional hard drive has moving parts. It has to physically spin and search for data. Modern Windows asks for lots of files at the same time, especially during startup, updates, antivirus scans and browser use. The hard drive simply cannot keep up.
An SSD upgrade replaces that slow storage with a much faster solid-state drive. There are no spinning parts, so Windows can load files almost instantly. This is why an HP Laptop 15 that feels unusable can often become smooth, responsive and practical again after one upgrade.
ALVA PC offers a UK-wide Windows laptop SSD upgrade service for HP Laptop 15 models. Data migration is included, so your files and Windows setup can be moved across where the original drive is healthy enough to copy.

Before And After Performance — HDD vs SSD
The biggest difference most HP Laptop 15 owners notice is startup speed. A laptop that previously took several minutes to reach the desktop can often boot in seconds after the upgrade. Programs open faster, Windows updates become less painful, and the machine stops feeling like it is constantly stuck.
| Metric | Before SSD Upgrade | After SSD Upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Boot time — typical | 3–7 minutes | 10–20 seconds |
| Boot time — strong result | 5–7 minutes | 7–8 seconds |
| Disk usage at idle | 95–100% | Under 10% |
| Opening Chrome | 20–40 seconds | 2–3 seconds |
| Battery life | Baseline | Can improve because the drive works less |
This is the Before And After Metrics Summary Table for the HP Laptop 15 SSD upgrade. The exact result depends on the processor, RAM, Windows condition and the health of the original drive, but the storage improvement is usually the most visible change on HDD-based HP Laptop 15 models.
Why Your HP Laptop 15 Is Showing 100% Disk Usage
100% disk usage means the storage drive is fully busy. It does not always mean the drive is broken. It often means Windows is asking the drive to do more than it can handle.
A simple way to understand it is this: a hard drive is like a filing cabinet where someone has to walk to each drawer, find the right document, and bring it back. An SSD is more like having all the documents instantly available. Windows is constantly asking for small files, updates, browser cache, antivirus checks and background services. A hard drive can become overwhelmed even when the processor is not working hard.
This is why many HP Laptop 15 owners open Task Manager and see the CPU sitting at normal levels while the disk is stuck at 100%. The processor is waiting for the hard drive. The laptop feels frozen because the storage cannot feed data fast enough.
Which HP Laptop 15 Model Do You Have?
“HP Laptop 15” is not one exact laptop. It is a large family covering many sub-series, including 15-bs, 15-da, 15-db, 15-dw, 15-dy, 15-ef, 15-fc and 15-fd models. This matters because the correct SSD type depends on the exact sub-family.
You can usually find the model number on the bottom label of the laptop. It may look like 15-bs0xx, 15-da0xxx, 15-dw, 15-dy, 15-ef, 15-fc or 15-fd. You may also find it inside Windows by going to Settings, then System, then About.
The older 15-bs models are an important caution point. Some support an M.2 SSD, but many 15-bs variants support SATA M.2 only, not NVMe. The socket can look similar, which is why incorrect SSD selection is a common DIY mistake on this family. Other 15-bs units may not have the physical M.2 slot fitted at all, meaning the correct upgrade is a 2.5-inch SATA SSD replacing the original hard drive.
The 15-da and 15-db generations are usually better upgrade candidates because many support both a 2.5-inch drive and an M.2 SSD. Later 15-dw, 15-dy, 15-ef, 15-fc and 15-fd models are more likely to use M.2 2280 SSD storage, with some newer units already fitted with small 128GB or 256GB SSDs from new.
This is why we check compatibility before confirming the job. The name “HP Laptop 15” is not enough on its own.
The Dual Storage Option — Add Speed Without Losing Your Files
Some HP Laptop 15 models allow a very useful upgrade path: adding a fast SSD for Windows while keeping the existing hard drive inside the laptop for file storage.
On supported 15-bs and 15-da Intel Core variants, and most 15-db variants, this can be the best option. The SSD becomes the new main drive for Windows and programs. The original hard drive can remain in place for photos, documents, downloads and other files. This gives you the speed of an SSD without losing the storage space you already had.
This is especially useful for customers who are nervous about data loss. Where dual storage is possible, the existing drive can stay physically installed. Where a direct replacement is required, we migrate your data to the new SSD wherever the original drive is healthy enough to copy.
Not every HP Laptop 15 supports dual storage. Newer slim models are often M.2-only. We confirm this during compatibility checking and inspection.
Running Out of Storage Space on Your HP Laptop 15?
Not every HP Laptop 15 upgrade is about slowness from a hard drive. Some newer models already have an SSD but came with very small capacity, often 128GB or 256GB. These laptops may feel fast at first, then gradually slow down as the drive fills up.
Windows updates, Office, photos, videos, downloads, OneDrive, school files and everyday programs can quickly consume a small SSD. Once the drive is nearly full, Windows has less room to work properly. You may see low storage warnings, failed updates, slow performance, or constant requests to delete files.
For these models, the upgrade is storage expansion rather than HDD replacement. We can replace the small SSD with a larger 500GB, 1TB or 2TB SSD, then migrate your data across where possible. This gives the laptop breathing room again and helps restore normal performance.
Our current SSD upgrade pricing starts with a £10 reservation fee. The total price is £150 for 500GB, £190 for 1TB, or £240 for 2TB. The £10 reservation is deducted from the final balance if the upgrade proceeds.
How Much Faster Is an HP Laptop 15 After an SSD Upgrade?
For HDD-based HP Laptop 15 models, the improvement can feel dramatic. The laptop does not become a gaming machine, and an SSD will not turn a low-end processor into a high-end one, but it removes the biggest bottleneck in everyday use.
Startup is usually the most noticeable change. A laptop that takes several minutes to reach the desktop can often start in under 20 seconds. Chrome, Word, Outlook, Zoom and basic applications open much faster. Windows updates are less painful because the system can read and write data quickly.
The improvement is especially strong on models with Celeron, Pentium, Core i3 or older AMD processors paired with a 5400rpm hard drive. These machines often feel worse than they really are because the hard drive makes every task wait. Once the storage is upgraded, the laptop can finally use the performance it already had.
Is It Worth Upgrading an HP Laptop 15?
For most working HP Laptop 15 models, yes — especially if the laptop has a hard drive and is physically in good condition. If the screen, keyboard, charging port, hinges and motherboard are all working, an SSD upgrade is often much better value than replacing the whole laptop.
Many HP Laptop 15 owners originally paid around £299–£399. Buying another entry-level laptop today can easily cost £300–£500, and many budget replacements still come with compromises. A £150 SSD upgrade can extend the useful life of the laptop without forcing you to move to a completely new machine.
The honest limitation is the processor. If your HP Laptop 15 has a very low-end Celeron or older AMD processor, it will still be a basic laptop after the upgrade. It will not become powerful, but it can become far less frustrating for emails, browsing, documents, video calls and everyday home use.
If your HP Laptop 15 has a Core i3, Core i5, Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5 processor, the upgrade case is usually stronger. In many of these laptops, the processor is still good enough. The hard drive is the part making the machine feel old.
How Difficult Is the HP Laptop 15 SSD Upgrade?
The HP Laptop 15 SSD upgrade is not the hardest laptop upgrade, but it is not always as simple as YouTube makes it look. Difficulty depends heavily on the exact sub-family.
Many HP Laptop 15 models hide screws underneath long rubber feet on the bottom cover. These feet need to be lifted carefully because they are adhesive-backed. If they are pulled too aggressively, they can stretch, tear, or fail to stick back properly. This is one of the most common mistakes during DIY attempts.
After the screws are removed, the bottom cover is usually held by plastic clips. These need to be released without cracking the casing. On many newer models, the battery should be disconnected or removed before SSD work begins. The SSD itself may only be held by one screw, but reaching it safely is the part that requires care.
The other difficulty is choosing the correct SSD. The 15-bs series is the main warning here because some variants support SATA-only M.2 storage, not NVMe. Buying the wrong drive can waste time and money. This is one reason our service checks the exact configuration before proceeding.
Common HP Laptop 15 SSD Upgrade Questions
Can I upgrade my HP Laptop 15 to an SSD?
Many HP Laptop 15 models can be upgraded, but the correct SSD type depends on the exact sub-family. Some use 2.5-inch SATA SSDs, some use M.2 SATA, and newer models often use M.2 NVMe.
Will I lose my files?
Data migration is included where the original drive is healthy enough to copy. If your model supports dual storage, your existing hard drive may be able to remain inside the laptop as a storage drive.
My HP Laptop 15 already has an SSD. Can it still be upgraded?
Yes. Many newer HP Laptop 15 models shipped with small 128GB or 256GB SSDs. These can often be replaced with a larger 500GB, 1TB or 2TB SSD.
Can the rubber feet be reused?
Yes, if removed carefully. We use suitable tools to lift and reattach them properly during the upgrade process.
Does an SSD upgrade fix every slow HP laptop?
No. An SSD fixes storage bottlenecks. It will not repair a failing motherboard, overheating issue, damaged Windows installation, or very weak processor. However, for HDD-based HP Laptop 15 models, it is usually the single biggest performance upgrade available.
