Will I lose my files? +
No. A battery replacement on a MacBook Pro 15″ 2016–2017 does not involve the storage drive, which is soldered to the logic board and is never removed or erased during the work. Your files, applications, logins and macOS installation stay exactly as they are. ALVA PC opens the bottom case, disconnects the battery and fits the replacement cell — no part of that process touches your data. We still recommend keeping a current Time Machine or iCloud backup before sending any computer by courier, as a sensible precaution rather than because the repair puts your files at risk.
How much does a MacBook Pro 15″ 2016–2017 battery replacement cost in the UK? +
ALVA PC charges a flat £180 for a UK mail-in MacBook Pro 15″ 2016–2017 battery replacement, including the battery, installation, full testing and insured return delivery. The price is the same for both the Late 2016 and Mid 2017 machines, since they use the same battery. Only £10 is due upfront to reserve the slot; the remaining £170 is requested after we send you video proof of your own laptop working with the new battery fitted. There are no diagnostic fees, no return-shipping charges and no price changes once the machine is in our hands.
How long does a MacBook Pro 15″ 2016–2017 battery replacement take? +
The usual mail-in turnaround is 3–5 business days from the day you send the laptop to the day it arrives back with you, including both legs of shipping. The battery work itself is typically completed within 24 hours of the machine arriving; most of the window is courier time. ALVA PC confirms arrival by WhatsApp, keeps you updated while the work is in progress, and sends video proof before return. If anything is likely to extend that window — a swollen cell needing extra care, or a second fault found at intake — we tell you before it becomes a delay.
Do I need to pay everything upfront? +
No. Only £10 is required to reserve your replacement, and that £10 comes off the total rather than being an additional fee. The remaining balance is requested only after ALVA PC has completed the work, tested the machine and sent you video footage of your actual laptop running on the new battery. If the repair cannot be completed, you do not pay the balance. That structure exists specifically because sending a laptop to a company you have not used before is a reasonable thing to feel cautious about, and the £10 keeps your exposure small until you have seen proof.
Is the work guaranteed? +
Yes. Every battery replacement ALVA PC carries out is covered by a 12 month labour warranty from the date the machine is returned to you. If the replacement cell fails or the installation develops a fault within that period, we put it right at no labour cost. The warranty covers the work we performed; it does not extend to unrelated faults that appear later, such as display or logic board issues, though we will always tell you honestly which category a problem falls into rather than leaving you to guess.
Can I post my MacBook instead of visiting a repair shop, and is that safe? +
Yes — ALVA PC is a mail-in service, so you never need to visit a shop or book an appointment. We arrange collection and supply the packaging, and the laptop travels with DPD, Royal Mail or UPS with full declared-value insurance up to £2,000 in both directions. This suits people who do not live near an independent Apple repairer, cannot take time out of a working day, or have found that local shops no longer service a machine this age. The whole process runs over WhatsApp, from the initial compatibility check through to the video proof at the end.
Will Apple still replace the battery in a 2016 or 2017 15-inch MacBook Pro? +
Both machines are now on Apple’s obsolete products list — the MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2016) in September 2024 and the MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) in 2026 — and Apple does not provide hardware service for obsolete products, with Apple Authorised Service Providers unable to order parts for them. There is one exception worth knowing: Apple states that Mac laptops may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period of up to ten years from when the product was last sold, subject to parts availability. That is worth asking about, but availability is not guaranteed. Independent repair is the reliable route for this generation.
Is my MacBook covered by Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro battery recall? +
Almost certainly not. Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Pro Battery Recall Program covers only the MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), and Apple states explicitly that the programme does not affect other MacBook Pro models. If your machine has a Touch Bar it is a 2016 or later model and falls outside that recall entirely. This trips people up regularly, because the recall was widely reported as affecting “15-inch MacBook Pros” without the model year attached. You can confirm which machine you have from the Apple menu, under About This Mac — and ALVA PC checks the model and serial at intake in any case.
Which battery does my A1707 use, and is it the same for the 2016 and 2017 models? +
The MacBook Pro 15″ Touch Bar uses the A1820 battery, a roughly 76 watt-hour pack, and it is shared across both the Late 2016 machine (A1707, EMC 3072) and the Mid 2017 machine (A1707, EMC 3162). That is why ALVA PC quotes one price for the whole 2016–2017 15-inch range rather than splitting it by year. Your model identifier is printed on the underside of the case and can also be checked from About This Mac. If your machine turns out to be a 13-inch A1706 or A1708, or a non-Touch Bar model, the battery and the price are different and we will tell you before anything is booked.
What does the “Service Battery” or “Service Recommended” warning mean, and how many cycles should this battery last? +
That message means macOS has judged the battery to be holding significantly less charge than it did when new, or to be failing a health check — it is a recommendation to replace the cell, not a sign that the laptop is broken. Apple rates the battery in this generation for 1,000 charge cycles before it is expected to drop to 80% of original capacity. A machine from 2016 or 2017 in daily use has usually passed that point. ALVA PC reads the cycle count and health figures at intake and tells you what they say, so replacement is confirmed as the right fix before any chargeable work begins.
My trackpad has stopped clicking properly and the case looks slightly raised — is that the battery? +
Those are the classic signs of a swollen battery on this model. The cells sit directly beneath the trackpad, so as they expand they press upward and stop the trackpad depressing, and the bottom case may bow enough that the laptop rocks on a flat surface. If you are seeing this, stop using and charging the machine and get in touch before doing anything else — a swollen lithium cell is a genuine fire risk and should not be left on charge or carried in a bag. ALVA PC handles swollen batteries regularly and will advise on safe packaging and collection for your specific situation.
Apple replaced the whole top case on these machines — do you have to do the same? +
No. On this generation the battery is bonded into the top case with adhesive, and Apple’s service procedure replaced the battery as part of a complete top case assembly including the keyboard and trackpad. ALVA PC removes and replaces the battery cells themselves, which is why a mail-in replacement costs a fraction of a full assembly swap and why it remains viable on a machine Apple no longer services. It is slower, more delicate work than a clip-out battery on a Windows laptop, and it is the reason we test thoroughly and send video proof before asking for the balance.
Will replacing the battery affect the Touch Bar or Touch ID? +
No. The Touch Bar and Touch ID on the 2016–2017 15-inch MacBook Pro are handled by Apple’s T1 chip, which is entirely separate from the battery and is not disturbed by a battery replacement. This generation also predates the T2 chip introduced in 2018, so it is not subject to the genuine-parts pairing behaviour that can produce service warnings on later Macs after a battery change. You will not see an “unknown part” notice or lose Touch ID as a result of the work. ALVA PC tests the Touch Bar and Touch ID as part of the post-repair check before the machine is returned.
Will a new battery actually fix the short runtime I’m seeing, or is macOS to blame? +
It depends on the cause, and it is worth separating the two. The A1707 had documented software-related battery drain early in its life that Apple addressed through macOS Sierra updates, so if your machine is fully updated and still running down quickly, a degraded cell is the most likely remaining explanation. Battery Health Management, introduced in macOS Catalina 10.15.5, also caps charging around 85–90% on machines left plugged in, which can look like reduced capacity but is deliberate. ALVA PC checks your cycle count, health readings and macOS version at intake and will tell you if replacement is not the right answer.
Is it worth replacing the battery in a 2016–2017 15-inch MacBook Pro in 2026? +
For most owners, yes — a £180 battery replacement on a machine with a working screen, keyboard and logic board is considerably cheaper than replacing the laptop, and these are still capable machines for writing, browsing, office work and light creative use. The honest caveats: the 2016 model tops out at macOS Monterey and the 2017 at macOS Ventura, so neither receives current Apple security updates, and some units in this range have separate display or graphics quirks worth checking first. ALVA PC will tell you at intake if we think the machine has problems that make the spend hard to justify.
