Will I lose my files? +
No. Speed-up work and virus removal don’t touch your documents, photos or emails. For a clean Windows reinstall, we back everything up first, reinstall, then put your files back and check them with you before we leave. We’ll always tell you before doing anything that affects your data.
Do you need my password? +
We’ll need you to log the computer in for us, but you don’t have to hand the password over — you’re welcome to type it yourself, and to stay with the machine the whole time. We never need your banking passwords, card details or email passwords, and we’ll never ask for them.
Does anyone else see my screen? +
On some jobs we bring in a specialist technician remotely, who may view the screen to help diagnose a fault. Our specialists work under contract to ALVA PC and may be based outside the UK. They only see what’s needed to diagnose the problem, and we won’t open your emails, documents, photos or saved passwords without asking you first. We’ll always tell you before we connect anyone, and you can say no — we’ll simply carry on without them.
How much does it cost? +
Speed-up and bloatware removal is £85, virus and malware removal is £110, no-boot repair is £110, and a clean Windows reinstall is £130. Every price includes the callout.
See the full breakdown above. Is the diagnosis really free? +
Yes. We come out, look at the machine, and tell you what’s wrong and what it costs. If you decide not to go ahead, you pay nothing at all — no callout charge, no diagnosis fee.
Do I need to know whether it’s a virus? +
Not at all. Most people can’t tell the difference between an infection, too much startup software, and a machine that’s simply out of disk space — and they look identical from the outside. Just describe what it’s doing and we’ll work out which it is.
How long does it take? +
Speed-up work is usually done within 90 minutes at your table. Virus removal and boot repairs are up to two hours. A clean Windows reinstall takes longer, so we’ll either work through it with you or collect the machine and bring it back — whichever suits you better.
Do you fix MacBooks as well as Windows laptops? +
Yes. Slow macOS performance, spinning beachballs, storage problems and apps hanging are all covered at the same prices. Windows desktops and all-in-one PCs are covered too.
What if the problem is hardware, not software? +
We’ll tell you during the free diagnosis. A failing drive, a dying battery or faulty memory won’t be fixed by cleaning up software, and we won’t charge you for a package that can’t solve your problem. We’ll quote the hardware work separately, and you’re free to say no.
Will it definitely be faster afterwards? +
On most machines the difference is obvious, particularly at startup. On a very old laptop still running a mechanical hard drive, software work helps but there’s a limit — in that case we’ll be honest and tell you an SSD upgrade is the change that actually transforms it.
What if the problem comes back? +
If the same problem returns within 14 days, we’ll come back out at no charge.
Can you come in the evening or at the weekend? +
Yes — we take bookings 7am to 11pm, seven days a week, and evenings and weekends are some of our busiest times.
Can you come to my workplace instead of my home? +
Yes, wherever that’s practical within our coverage area. Just let us know the address and any access details when you book.
When do I pay? +
After the work is finished and you’ve tested the computer yourself. Never before.
