If your laptop has become slow to start, struggles when opening programs, or takes several minutes to load Windows, an SSD upgrade is often the single most effective performance improvement available for a laptop.

Is Your Laptop Running Slow? Signs You Need an SSD Upgrade

A slow laptop can be caused by several factors, from background applications and software issues to hardware limitations. Below are some of the most common causes and how to identify whether your storage drive is the main bottleneck.

A slow laptop can be caused by several factors. Too many background applications running at once can consume system memory and processing power, while malware or unwanted software may slow down the system by running hidden processes. Windows updates installing in the background can also temporarily affect performance, and a nearly full drive can leave very little free storage space for Windows to operate efficiently. However, one of the most common causes of persistent slowness in older laptops is the use of a traditional mechanical hard drive, which reads and writes data much slower than modern solid-state drives.

While many factors can slow down a laptop, certain symptoms often point specifically to the storage drive becoming a performance bottleneck. If your laptop takes several minutes to boot into Windows, struggles to open simple programs, or frequently freezes when launching applications, the hard drive may be limiting overall system performance. Another common indicator is disk usage constantly reaching 100% in Task Manager, even when only a few programs are open. Older mechanical drives may also produce clicking or grinding noises, which can signal physical wear. Slow file transfers and delays when saving or opening documents are also typical signs that the storage drive is struggling to keep up with modern workloads. When these symptoms appear, upgrading to a solid-state drive (SSD) can dramatically improve responsiveness, boot times and overall system speed.

If you are unsure whether your laptop still uses a traditional hard drive or a newer solid-state drive, you can check this quickly using Windows. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager, then select the Performance tab. On the left-hand side you will see your system drives listed as Disk 0, Disk 1, or similar. When you click on the disk, Windows will usually show whether it is an HDD or an SSD. If your laptop is still running on an HDD, this is often the main reason for slow boot times, delays when opening programs, and sluggish file transfers. Replacing the hard drive with a modern SSD is one of the most effective ways to improve overall laptop performance.

An SSD upgrade tends to deliver the biggest improvement on laptops that are around 3–8 years old and still running a traditional hard drive. Many laptops from this period were originally sold with mechanical drives, which are significantly slower than modern solid-state storage. If your laptop already has enough memory (around 8GB of RAM or more) and the processor is not constantly running at 100%, the storage drive is often the main factor holding the system back. In these cases, replacing the hard drive with an SSD can transform how the laptop feels to use. Systems that previously took minutes to start up can boot much faster, programs open more quickly, and everyday tasks such as browsing or working with documents become noticeably smoother. For many users, this upgrade can extend the useful life of their laptop for several more years.

What’s Included in Our Laptop SSD Upgrade Service?

Our service includes the supply and professional installation of a compatible solid-state drive (SSD) for your laptop, using the correct tools and handling procedures to ensure your device is safely opened, the new drive securely fitted, and the system correctly configured.

For most hard drive upgrades, we transfer your existing data, programs, and Windows installation to the new SSD at no additional cost. This means your laptop will usually return with your files, applications, and settings exactly where you left them — only running much faster thanks to the new solid-state drive.

If the original drive is severely damaged or unreadable, a full transfer may not be possible. In these situations, a fresh Windows installation may be required instead, but we will always attempt to preserve your data whenever the drive is still accessible.

Alongside data transfer, also included at no extra cost

Windows Installation & Activation

Your existing Windows licence is preserved — normally no need to purchase Windows again.

Storage Size Options (500GB – 2TB)

Choose the size that suits your needs — from everyday use to large file libraries and games.

System Testing & Optimisation

Drive health checked, Windows boot confirmed, and basic optimisation performed before return.

If required, we can perform a clean installation of Windows on the new SSD to ensure the system runs smoothly. Your existing Windows licence is preserved, meaning there is normally no need to purchase Windows again. Once installation is complete, the system is activated using the licence already associated with your laptop. This ensures the device remains fully licensed and ready to use. A fresh Windows installation can also help remove old system clutter and improve stability.

We offer a range of SSD storage sizes so you can choose the option that best suits your needs. Common upgrades include 512GB, 1TB and 2TB SSDs, allowing significantly more storage space than many original laptop drives. Larger capacities are ideal if you store large files, games, or media libraries, while smaller upgrades provide a cost-effective way to improve performance on everyday laptops.

After installation, the laptop is tested to confirm the SSD is functioning correctly and the system is stable. This includes checking drive health, confirming Windows boots correctly, and ensuring the laptop recognises the new storage device. Basic system optimisation may also be performed so the operating system runs efficiently with the new SSD.

All SSD upgrade services include a 12-month labour warranty covering the installation work carried out during the upgrade. If a problem occurs as a result of the SSD installation itself — such as the drive not being properly recognised or an issue related to the upgrade process — we will resolve it at no additional cost within the warranty period.

The SSD itself is also protected by the manufacturer’s warranty, which typically ranges from 3 to 5 years depending on the brand and model used. If the drive develops a manufacturing fault during that time, the manufacturer warranty covers replacement of the SSD.

The warranty covers the SSD and the installation work specifically. Issues unrelated to the upgrade — such as motherboard faults, battery failure, accidental damage, or other hardware problems — are not covered under the SSD upgrade warranty.

Is My Data Safe During an SSD Upgrade?

You will not lose your data. During the SSD upgrade process, we transfer the contents of your existing drive to the new SSD so that your documents, photos, programs, and settings remain in place. Your laptop returns with the same files and applications you had before — only running significantly faster.

As part of our laptop SSD upgrade service, this data transfer is included at no additional cost whenever the original drive is still readable. The only time files are not transferable is when the original drive is corrupt.

In many cases Windows does not need to be reinstalled because the existing system can be transferred directly to the new drive. However, if the original installation is corrupted, unstable, or incompatible with the new SSD, we may perform a fresh Windows installation instead to ensure the system runs reliably.

Most modern laptops store the Windows licence within the motherboard firmware, meaning Windows normally reactivates automatically after installation — no need to purchase Windows again.

If the existing drive is beginning to fail, we can often still copy it successfully. If the drive is severely damaged or completely unreadable, the laptop can still receive a new SSD and a fresh Windows installation, but recovering files from the original drive may require specialised data recovery services, which are separate from standard SSD upgrades.

How Long Does a Mail-In Laptop SSD Upgrade Take?

Our SSD upgrade service is designed to be fast and efficient, with most upgrades completed within a few days. Below is a breakdown of the typical timeframes involved at each stage of the process.

Once your laptop arrives at our workshop, the SSD upgrade itself is typically completed within 1–2 working days. This timeframe covers the physical installation of the new solid-state drive as well as initial setup and preparation of the system. In many cases the work is completed sooner, but allowing a short service window helps ensure each device is handled carefully and tested properly before being returned.

If your existing drive is still readable, we transfer the contents of the original drive to the new SSD so that your files, programs and Windows installation remain intact. The time required for this process can vary depending on the size of the drive and the condition of the original storage device. For example, transferring data from a smaller, healthy drive may complete relatively quickly, while copying large amounts of data or working with a drive that is slowing down can take longer. After the transfer is complete, the laptop is tested to ensure the new SSD is functioning correctly.

When courier transit time is included, most customers receive their upgraded laptop back within approximately 3–5 days from the time it is shipped to us. This includes delivery to our workshop, the SSD upgrade itself, system testing, and the return shipment. Because the service operates nationwide, delivery times may vary slightly depending on location and courier schedules, but the majority of upgrades fall comfortably within this overall timeframe.

SSD Upgrades for Gaming Laptops

Gaming laptops can benefit significantly from SSD upgrades, improving load times, storage capacity, and overall responsiveness. Below are some common questions around compatibility, storage options, and performance improvements for gaming systems.

Gaming laptops commonly use either SATA SSDs or NVMe SSDs for storage. SATA drives are typically found in older laptops and offer a significant improvement over traditional hard drives. NVMe SSDs, however, are much faster and are commonly used in newer gaming laptops, delivering quicker load times and faster data transfer speeds. During the upgrade process we install the fastest compatible SSD supported by the laptop’s hardware, ensuring the system benefits from the best performance available for that device.

Most gaming laptops allow the storage drive to be upgraded, especially if the device originally shipped with a smaller SSD or traditional hard drive. Many models include accessible M.2 or SATA storage slots, making it possible to install a higher-capacity or faster SSD. Before carrying out the upgrade, we check the laptop’s configuration to confirm which storage type and capacity are supported, ensuring the new SSD is fully compatible with the system.

Modern games can require a large amount of storage space, with many popular titles using 50GB to over 150GB per game. Because of this, upgrading to a larger SSD can be beneficial for gaming laptops that frequently install multiple games at once. For many gamers, 1TB or larger SSD upgrades provide a more comfortable amount of storage for modern titles, updates, and additional applications.

While a 256GB SSD can technically run modern games, the available storage can fill up very quickly. After accounting for the Windows operating system and essential applications, there may be limited space remaining for larger game installations. For this reason, many gaming laptop upgrades opt for 500GB or 1TB SSDs to provide sufficient room for several modern titles without constantly needing to uninstall games.

SSD upgrades and RAM upgrades improve different aspects of laptop performance. Installing an SSD mainly improves game loading times, system startup speed, and file access, allowing games and levels to load significantly faster. Upgrading RAM, on the other hand, helps with multitasking and reducing stutter when multiple applications or background processes are running. For gaming laptops that still use a hard drive or have very limited storage space, upgrading to an SSD is often the first upgrade that delivers noticeable performance improvements. Before carrying out an upgrade, we always assess the system to determine whether storage or memory is the bigger limitation.

What This Upgrade Can — and Can’t — Fix

An SSD upgrade can significantly improve laptop performance, but the results depend on the underlying cause of the issue. Below are some common questions about what an SSD upgrade can and cannot fix.

In many cases, yes — especially if the laptop still uses a traditional mechanical hard drive (HDD). Older hard drives are significantly slower than modern solid-state drives and are often the main cause of long boot times, slow application launches, and constant high disk usage. Replacing the HDD with an SSD allows the system to access files much faster, which can dramatically improve startup speed, program loading times, and overall responsiveness. Many laptops that previously took several minutes to reach the Windows desktop can start in well under a minute after an SSD upgrade. If your laptop still uses a mechanical hard drive, upgrading to an SSD is usually the single most noticeable performance improvement available.

An SSD can improve certain aspects of gaming performance, but it is important to understand what it does and does not affect. Installing an SSD typically reduces game loading times and can help prevent stutter caused by slow storage when games stream data from disk. Levels load faster and updates install more quickly compared with traditional hard drives. However, an SSD does not increase frame rates (FPS). Frame rate is primarily determined by the laptop’s CPU and GPU performance. Memory can also play a role — while SSDs improve storage speed, RAM helps with multitasking and system responsiveness during heavy workloads.

Although SSDs are generally very reliable, a failing drive can sometimes lead to slow performance or system instability. Signs of potential SSD issues may include unusual system freezes, file read errors, or repeated operating system warnings related to the storage device. These situations are relatively uncommon, but they can occur as hardware ages or if the drive develops a manufacturing fault. As part of the upgrade process, we run basic drive checks and system diagnostics to confirm that the new SSD is operating correctly before the laptop is returned.

While upgrading to an SSD can significantly improve storage speed, it does not resolve every type of performance issue. Some problems are related to other components of the laptop. For example, an SSD upgrade will not fix overheating issues, failing batteries, or hardware faults such as damaged graphics processors. It also cannot overcome limitations caused by very old processors or insufficient RAM during demanding workloads. In those situations, improving system performance may involve additional upgrades or repairs beyond storage replacement.

How Much Faster Is an SSD Upgrade — And Is It Worth It?

One of the biggest reasons people upgrade to an SSD is the noticeable improvement in speed. Below are some real-world examples of how an SSD upgrade can improve performance across everyday tasks.

Yes — for many laptops the speed improvement is immediately noticeable. Traditional hard drives rely on spinning mechanical disks to read and write data, which is much slower than the flash-based storage used in modern solid-state drives. After upgrading to an SSD, common tasks such as starting Windows, opening applications, and loading files usually happen much faster. For laptops that previously relied on an older HDD, the upgrade can make the system feel significantly more responsive during everyday use.

One of the clearest improvements after an SSD upgrade is startup speed. Laptops that previously took several minutes to reach the Windows desktop can often boot in under 20–30 seconds once a solid-state drive is installed. For transparency, we record a short upgrade report video per customer that shows the laptop during installation and a final boot test after the new SSD has been installed. These videos demonstrate the real-world difference in startup performance after the upgrade.

An SSD upgrade also improves how quickly programs and files open. Applications that previously took several seconds to launch on a hard drive can open almost instantly on an SSD. This includes common tasks such as opening web browsers, office software, and large documents. Because the system can read and write data much faster, everyday workflows often feel smoother and more responsive after the upgrade.

The performance gap between traditional hard drives and solid-state drives is significant. HDDs typically read data at around 80–160 MB/s, while modern SSDs can operate several times faster depending on the interface used. If you want a deeper breakdown, see our SSD vs HDD laptop comparison guide. In practical terms, this means faster Windows startup, faster program launches, faster file transfers, and less waiting when opening large applications. For laptops that still rely on mechanical drives, switching to an SSD is often the most impactful upgrade available.

For many laptops that are three to eight years old, upgrading the storage drive can be far more cost-effective than buying a completely new device. If the laptop still has a capable processor and enough memory, replacing the hard drive with an SSD can dramatically improve usability. In many cases, this upgrade allows an older laptop to remain useful for several additional years, making it a practical alternative to replacing the device.

An SSD mainly improves game loading times and system responsiveness, allowing levels and game assets to load more quickly than they would on a traditional hard drive. This can reduce waiting time when launching games or moving between levels. However, an SSD does not increase frame rates (FPS). Gaming performance is primarily determined by the laptop’s processor and graphics hardware. The SSD simply ensures the system can load game data faster.

Is It Safe to Post Your Laptop for an SSD Upgrade?

Yes — sending a laptop by courier for repair is safe when the shipment is properly packaged and fully tracked. Our mail-in process uses trackable and insured courier delivery, so the shipment can be monitored throughout transit. Deliveries are typically handled with signature confirmation to ensure the device is received securely. For additional peace of mind, higher coverage levels can be arranged when required.

For a standard SSD upgrade, access to personal files is not required. The work mainly involves replacing the storage drive inside the laptop, and in many cases the device does not need to be logged into for the hardware upgrade itself.

If data transfer is requested, the process copies the existing system to the new SSD so that files and programs remain intact. We do not review or access personal files during this process. Customers who prefer additional privacy may also remove the original drive before shipping or ensure features such as BitLocker encryption remain enabled.

Before sending your laptop for an upgrade, it is good practice to carry out a few simple preparation steps:

1 Back up important files
2 Sign out of accounts and web browsers
3 Disable device tracking services if enabled
4 Remove SIM cards or external storage cards
5

Yes, cloning allows the contents of one drive to be copied onto another drive so that the system remains the same after the upgrade. This process is commonly used during SSD upgrades to preserve files and applications.
Can You Access My Personal Files? +
No — personal files are not accessed during a standard SSD upgrade. The process focuses on hardware replacement and, when requested, transferring data without reviewing personal folders.
What If My Current Drive Is Failing? +
If the original drive is beginning to fail, data transfer may depend on how readable the drive still is. When the drive is severely damaged, the laptop can still receive a new SSD, although recovering files may require specialist data recovery services.
How Should I Package My Laptop for Courier Collection? +
Your laptop should be securely wrapped and placed in a sturdy box to prevent movement during transit. Using protective padding such as bubble wrap helps ensure the device is protected while being transported. If you do not have any packaging material to put the laptop into, you can purchase from us during your booking procedure for £10. We will send this out to you with your postage label, and then you can send your laptop to us.
Do I Need the Original Laptop Box? +
No, the original box is not required. Any appropriately sized box with sufficient padding can be used to safely package the laptop for shipping.
Do I Need to Be Home for Collection? +
If you choose doorstep courier collection, someone will normally need to be present to hand the parcel to the driver. Alternatively, you can send the laptop using a parcel shop or locker if that is more convenient.
