Lenovo ThinkPad E15 SSD Upgrade
& Storage Expansion Service

The ThinkPad E15 is a practical business laptop worth keeping — but many models were sold with small SSDs, and some Gen 1 units still have a hard drive. We upgrade the storage, keep your familiar setup intact, and send video proof before you pay the balance.

Only £10 upfront. Remaining balance due only after video proof of your laptop working.

The Lenovo ThinkPad E15 is a popular 15.6-inch business laptop used by small businesses, students, remote workers and office users who want a practical ThinkPad without paying T-series prices. It is a sensible machine to keep using, especially if the processor, screen and keyboard still suit your work. The common problem is storage — many ThinkPad E15 laptops were sold with a small SSD, and some older Gen 1 models were sold with a traditional hard drive.

Our Windows laptop SSD upgrade service is designed for this exact situation. The aim is not to return a different laptop. The aim is to return your same familiar ThinkPad E15 with more usable storage and your normal Windows setup preserved wherever possible — your files, folders, Outlook data, browser logins, accounting software and familiar way of working.

This model-specific upgrade is part of our Laptop SSD Upgrade Service (UK Mail-In) — which includes installation, data transfer, and insured return shipping.

Lenovo ThinkPad E15 SSD Upgrade Overview

The ThinkPad E15 family changed significantly between generations, so checking the exact model is important before choosing an SSD. The E15 Gen 1 is the main model where a 2.5-inch hard drive may be present. Later models moved heavily towards M.2 NVMe SSD storage, often with two M.2 positions — making the E15 one of the better business laptop families for storage expansion.

The key compatibility issue across the E15 family is SSD length. Some generations use the shorter M.2 2242 format, others support the more common M.2 2280, and some offer both. The Gen 4 Intel is especially important to check — it uses 2242 slots where many owners expect 2280 support.

Which Lenovo ThinkPad E15 Generation Do You Have?

If you are not sure which generation you have, you can still check compatibility with us before booking. We confirm the exact model before recommending the upgrade route.

Best HDD-to-SSD transformation

ThinkPad E15 Gen 1

Gen 1 Intel / AMD (2020) HDD configs available

The only E15 generation where a 2.5-inch mechanical hard drive may be present. If yours still has an HDD, this is the biggest performance jump available — boot times dropping from minutes to seconds. Also supports M.2 SSD alongside the HDD bay.

Strong dual-SSD expansion

ThinkPad E15 Gen 2 & Gen 3

Gen 2 Intel / AMD (2021) Gen 3 AMD (2022) M.2 2242 + M.2 2280

Support both a 2242 and 2280 M.2 SSD position — excellent storage expansion candidates. Common upgrade: move from 256GB to 1TB or 2TB, or add a second SSD while keeping the original Windows drive intact.

Compatibility check critical

ThinkPad E15 Gen 4 Intel

Gen 4 Intel (2022) ⚠ Two 2242 slots only

Uses two M.2 2242 slots — not 2280. A standard 2280 SSD will not fit. This is one of the easiest E15 models to buy the wrong SSD for. Always confirm the exact model before ordering parts.

Flexible upgrade route

ThinkPad E15 Gen 4 AMD

Gen 4 AMD (2022) M.2 2242 + M.2 2280

More flexible than the Intel Gen 4 — supports both 2242 and 2280 positions. Check PCIe speed expectations before selecting a high-performance NVMe drive.

Is Your ThinkPad E15 Running Out of Storage Space?

Many ThinkPad E15 owners do not have a broken laptop. They have a storage problem. A 128GB or 256GB SSD can feel acceptable when the laptop is new, but it fills quickly once Windows, Microsoft Office, Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, browser downloads, photos, work folders and accounting software are installed.

When the drive becomes nearly full, the laptop may start to feel slow even though it already has an SSD. Windows needs free space for updates, temporary files, indexing and background tasks. Upgrading to a larger SSD can make the machine feel calmer, smoother and easier to use.

Light use

500GB SSD

Suitable for lighter office use, documents, emails and basic file storage.

Best for most

1TB SSD

Best balance for most ThinkPad E15 owners — room for Windows, Office, Teams, Outlook and work files.

Heavy use

2TB SSD

Large work folders, photos, videos, archives and heavy business use all on the laptop at once.

Real-World ThinkPad E15 Storage Complaints

The E15 family is more of a storage-expansion laptop than a classic HDD-heavy laptop. Most frustrations come from limited space, upgrade confusion and not knowing which SSD route is safest for the exact generation.

01

Original SSD too small

Many E15 laptops shipped with 128GB, 256GB or 512GB drives. Once Windows, Office, Teams, Outlook, OneDrive and work files build up, the drive fills fast — and a nearly full SSD slows everything down.

02

Second SSD slot confusion

Many E15 owners discover their laptop may have two M.2 positions but aren’t sure whether the second slot is usable, whether it’s 2242 or 2280, or whether their exact Intel or AMD generation supports the same layout.

03

Buying the wrong SSD length

Especially critical on the Gen 4 Intel, where 2242 is required. Owners buy a standard 2280 SSD only to find it physically doesn’t fit. A mistake that’s easily avoided with a compatibility check first.

04

Sluggish despite decent specs

Some users report an E15 feeling slow with an i5 or Ryzen processor. In many cases the issue is a nearly full SSD, 8GB RAM, Windows 11 background tasks and Teams all competing at the same time.

05

Gen 1 hard drive still present

Some E15 Gen 1 owners don’t realise their laptop still has a 2.5-inch mechanical hard drive. Long boot times, high disk usage and Outlook delays are the tell-tale signs — and the improvement from an SSD swap is dramatic.

Before and After Performance — HDD vs SSD

If your ThinkPad E15 Gen 1 still has a hard drive, the improvement from an SSD upgrade can be dramatic. For SSD-equipped E15 models, the benefit is usually less about raw speed and more about breathing room — moving from 256GB to 1TB stops the laptop constantly fighting for free space.

Technical Details & Special Cases

Expand any section for model-specific or technical detail.

The ThinkPad E15 is especially useful because many models support more than one storage position. Depending on the generation, your laptop may allow the existing SSD to be replaced with a larger one, or a second SSD to be added alongside the original drive.

Gen 2, Gen 3 and Gen 4 AMD models commonly support both a 2242 and 2280 M.2 position. This means keeping your original Windows drive intact while adding extra storage — useful for owners who want more space without disrupting their existing setup. The Gen 4 Intel is the exception — both slots are 2242 only.

On many ThinkPad E15 generations, yes. Adding a second SSD can be useful if you want to keep your existing Windows installation untouched while adding more space for files — it can also reduce anxiety because your familiar laptop setup stays in place.

However, second SSD support depends on the exact generation. Some models use a 2242 SSD in the second slot, some use a 2280, and some support both. The Gen 4 Intel uses only 2242 in both positions. That is why compatibility checking matters before payment beyond the £10 reservation.

Not every E15 accepts the same SSD length. Some use the shorter M.2 2242 format, while others support the more common M.2 2280 format. A 2280 SSD is longer and more widely available. A 2242 SSD is shorter and must be chosen carefully — buying the wrong one can mean the SSD simply does not fit.

Our Windows SSD upgrade service includes compatibility checking before the work is carried out, so you do not need to guess the correct drive type. This is especially important on the Gen 4 Intel where both slots are 2242 only.

The ThinkPad E15 family is not HDD-heavy overall, but the Gen 1 model is the exception. Some E15 Gen 1 laptops were sold with a 2.5-inch mechanical hard drive. These machines can feel much slower than the processor would suggest because the hard drive becomes the bottleneck.

If your E15 takes a long time to start Windows, freezes during updates, struggles to open Outlook, or sits at high disk usage in Task Manager, it may still be using a mechanical hard drive. Replacing that hard drive with an SSD is usually one of the biggest improvements available. For newer E15 models the issue is usually limited capacity rather than hard drive speed.

While the laptop is open for a storage upgrade, it can also be worth checking the RAM. Many ThinkPad E15 laptops were sold with 8GB RAM, which can feel tight with Windows 11, Teams, Outlook, Chrome and accounting software running together.

An SSD upgrade solves the storage bottleneck, but RAM affects multitasking. If your laptop is slow when several apps are open, a RAM upgrade may be worth considering at the same time. RAM support varies by generation and configuration — we check this case by case.

For a technician, the ThinkPad E15 is generally one of the easier business laptops to upgrade. The bottom panel normally comes off with captive Phillips screws, and the SSD is accessible without removing the motherboard. There is no soldering, no glue, and no screen removal involved for a normal SSD upgrade.

For a cautious DIY user, the risk is less about difficulty and more about choosing the wrong SSD, damaging plastic clips, forgetting to disconnect the battery, or disturbing the wrong component. That is why a professional upgrade can be worthwhile even on an easier laptop — we check the storage layout, install the correct SSD, test the laptop, and send video proof before requesting the remaining balance.

Is It Worth Upgrading a Lenovo ThinkPad E15?

In most cases, yes. The ThinkPad E15 is still a practical laptop if the keyboard, screen, battery and processor meet your needs. Gen 2, Gen 3 and Gen 4 models can still be very useful office machines, especially with a larger SSD and enough RAM.

For Gen 1 models with a hard drive, the improvement can be especially noticeable. For later models, the value comes from storage expansion — moving from a cramped 256GB drive to a 1TB or 2TB SSD can make the laptop far easier to live with.

This is also more cost-effective than replacing the whole laptop if you are happy with your current setup. You keep the same familiar ThinkPad, the same Windows environment and the same working habits, but with the storage problem removed.

Common Lenovo ThinkPad E15 SSD Upgrade Questions

Will I lose my files? +
The goal is to preserve your files and familiar setup wherever possible. If migration is suitable, we can move your data, Windows setup, folders, Outlook data and user files to the new SSD. If a fresh Windows installation is more appropriate this is discussed first — no surprises.
Can you keep Outlook and business software? +
Where possible, yes. Many customers care about Outlook data, accounting software, saved browser logins, desktop folders and familiar settings. The aim is continuity, not disruption.
How long does the upgrade take? +
Typical turnaround is 3–5 business days from the point you send the laptop to the point you receive the upgraded laptop back.
Do I pay everything upfront? +
No. You only pay £10 upfront to reserve the upgrade. The remaining balance is only due after we send video proof showing your actual laptop working after the upgrade.
What if I need a 2242 SSD — will that limit my options? +
Not significantly. 2242 SSDs are available in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB capacities from reputable brands. The selection is slightly smaller than 2280 but the upgrade options are still practical for most ThinkPad E15 owners.
Can I add a second SSD without replacing the original? +
On many E15 generations yes — Gen 2, Gen 3 and Gen 4 AMD models commonly support a second M.2 position. This lets you keep the original Windows drive and add extra storage separately. We confirm whether your exact model supports this before recommending the route.
